Bus vs Plane:
CO2 Emissions Compared
A charter bus emits just 27g of CO2 per passenger per kilometre. compared to 185g for a plane. That’s an 85% reduction in carbon emissions for the same journey.

CO2 Emissions per Passenger per Kilometre
Figures represent average CO2 emissions per passenger per kilometre. Car assumes 1.5 occupants, bus assumes 40 occupants.
What the Numbers Tell Us
Less CO2 Than Flying
A charter bus emits 27g CO2 per passenger-km versus 185g for a short-haul flight. For a 500 km journey with 40 passengers, that’s 540 kg vs 3,700 kg of CO2.
Less CO2 Than Cars
If those same 40 passengers drove in separate cars (1.5 persons per car), they would produce 27 times more CO2 collectively. Sharing one bus is dramatically cleaner.
Less CO2 Than Trains
Even compared to rail. already one of the greenest modes. a full charter bus produces about a third less CO2 per passenger-km. And it goes door to door.
CO2 Comparison: Real European Routes
| Route (approx.) | Charter Bus | Plane | Car | Bus Saves |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam → Paris (500 km) | 14 kg | 93 kg | 105 kg | 85% |
| London → Barcelona (1,500 km) | 41 kg | 278 kg | 315 kg | 85% |
| Berlin → Rome (1,800 km) | 49 kg | 333 kg | 378 kg | 85% |
| Munich → Vienna (450 km) | 12 kg | 83 kg | 95 kg | 85% |
CO2 figures are per passenger. Bus assumes 40 passengers, car assumes 1.5 occupants. Air figures include radiative forcing multiplier.
Why Group Bus Travel Is the Greenest Choice
Shared efficiency. The fundamental advantage of a bus is simple maths: one engine moves 40–57 people. A plane might carry more passengers in total, but the fuel burned per seat-kilometre is vastly higher due to the energy required for flight.
No altitude emissions. Aircraft release CO2, nitrogen oxides and water vapour at high altitude, where their warming effect is 2–4 times greater than the same emissions at ground level. This “radiative forcing” multiplier is not captured in simple CO2 comparisons but is critical to the true climate impact of flying.
Modern diesel and alternative fuels. Euro VI coaches are already among the cleanest diesel vehicles on the road. The industry is rapidly transitioning to biodiesel, CNG and fully electric coaches, which will push bus emissions even lower in coming years.
Door-to-door means fewer transfers. A bus picks you up at your hotel and drops you at your destination. No taxi to the airport, no shuttle to the terminal, no rental car at the other end. Those “last mile” trips add significant hidden emissions to air travel.
The Corporate Case
Many companies now track Scope 3 emissions from business travel. Choosing a charter bus over flights for team events, conferences and offsites can significantly reduce your corporate carbon footprint. and it looks great in your ESG report.
The School Case
Educational institutions increasingly prioritise sustainability. A school trip by coach to Paris instead of a flight teaches students about environmental responsibility while saving the school money.
The Event Case
Conference organisers can offer shuttle buses as a “green transport option” for delegates, reducing the event’s overall carbon footprint and demonstrating environmental commitment to sponsors.
What Bus-service Does Beyond the Bus
Measure
We calculate the exact CO2 emissions for every trip we operate, based on distance, vehicle type and passenger count.
Offset
100% of remaining emissions are offset through certified carbon compensation projects. Every trip is carbon neutral.
Plant Trees
We invest in reforestation: one tree planted per 2,000 km driven, 10 trees for every 5-day booking.
Report
Every client receives a CO2 certificate documenting emissions and compensation for their trip.
